Avoiding Scams: Take These Steps to Protect Your Accounts

Steps to Protect Your Accounts from Fraud and Scams

Scammers use a wide range of tactics to trick individuals and businesses into sharing information or sending money. The good news is that taking a few simple precautions can greatly reduce your risk. Use the steps below to strengthen your security, build good habits, and stay ahead of common scam techniques.

1. Never Share Personal or Account Information

Legitimate organizations—including Western State Bank—will never ask for your online banking password, full debit card number, PIN, or verification codes.
If someone asks for this information, it’s a scam. Hang up or delete the message immediately.

Keep in mind:
  • Caller ID can be spoofed
  • Emails and texts messages can easily be falsified
  • Even familiar voices can now be spoofed using AI
If you’re unsure, contact your local banking center using a number you trust.

2. Beware of Dangerous Links

Scammers often send emails or texts that look like they’re from a bank, delivery service, or well-known company.

Avoid clicking if:
  • You weren’t expecting the message
  • The wording feels urgent or threatening
  • The link looks unusual
  • The message contains spelling errors
  • It asks you to “verify” or “unlock” anything
When in doubt, go directly to the company’s website instead of using the link provided.

3. Be Skeptical of Pressure or Urgency

Scammers rely on fear, excitement, or time pressure to cloud judgment.

Common red flags include:
  • “Act now or your account will be closed.”
  • “Don’t tell anyone about this.”
  • “You must pay immediately to avoid arrest.”
  • “You’ve won money—just pay the fees and/or taxes to claim it!”
If something feels rushed, pause. A real business or agency will always allow you time to verify.

4. Verify Before Sending Money

Scammers often ask for:
  • Gift card payments
  • Wire transfers
  • Cryptocurrency
  • Peer-to-peer app transfers
  • Cash sent by mail
These methods are nearly impossible to reverse.

Before sending money:
  • Verify the person’s identity using a known number
  • Discuss it with a trusted friend or family member
  • Ask yourself whether the request seems typical or unusual
When in doubt, don’t send it.

5. Stay Informed About New Scam Tactics

Scammers constantly adapt their approaches. Ensuring you know their tactics will help prevent falling victim to a scam.

6. Keep Your Devices Updated

Keeping your phone, tablet, and computer updated helps protect you from malware and security vulnerabilities.

Make sure to take the following actions:
  • Install system updates when prompted
  • Keep your virus protection current
  • Avoid downloading apps from unknown developers
Small updates can close big security gaps.

7. Use Strong, Unique Passwords

Password strength is one of the most important ways to protect your accounts.

Tips for safer passwords:
  • Use at least 12–16 characters
  • Avoid using the same password for multiple accounts
  • Don’t include family names, birthdays, addresses, or predictable patterns
  • Enable two-step verification whenever available
A password manager can help you create and store strong passwords securely.

8. Enable Alerts & Card Controls

Western State Bank offers helpful tools to monitor and protect your accounts.

With our mobile app, you can
  • Turn your debit card on or off instantly
  • Receive alerts for transactions
  • Set spending or location limits
  • Monitor activity in real time
These tools help you stay aware of account changes and quickly stop unauthorized activity.

9. Utilize Online Banking & Online Bill Pay

We recommend enrolling in Online Banking so you'll be aware of unauthorized transactions the same day they occur. This allows you to take action before you experience additional loss.

Online Bill Pay

Within Online Banking is a feature called Online Bill Pay, which allows your bank to write checks and pay your bills on your behalf. Online Bill Pay allows payments to be sent without using a personal check—which contains your account number. This reduces the risk of check fraud and mail theft, including check washing.

These tools help you stay aware of account changes and quickly stop unauthorized activity.
